    Responsibilities

     

    The Anesthesiologist provides anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures under the standards of the Facility's Department of Anesthesiology and in accordance with Facility policies and procedures. The Anesthesiologist administers anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures, provides continuous vigilant observation of patients by monitoring the patient's physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents and informs the surgeon/physician performing the procedure of any adverse condition that potentially threatens the safety or care of the patient.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Provides healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Such services include, but are not limited to:

    • Administer anesthetic or sedation during surgical/medical procedures, using local, intravenous, spinal or caudal methods.
    • Perform pre-op evaluation of patient, obtain medical history, informed consent and order diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical, obstetrical and other medical procedures.
    • Monitor patient before, during and after anesthesia and counteract adverse reactions or complications.
    • Provide and maintain life support and airway management and help prepare patients for emergency surgery.
    • Record type and amount of anesthesia and patient condition throughout procedure.
    • Position patient on operating/procedure table to maximize patient comfort and accessibility for surgery/other procedure.
    • Perform appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as, but not limited to, insertion of intravenous catheters, insertion of invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol; endotracheal intubation and extubation; perform arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
    • Decide when patients have recovered or become stabilized enough to be sent safely to another location in the Facility or be discharged home following the procedure.
    • Coordinate administration of anesthetics with surgeons/other physicians during procedures.
    • Confer with other medical professionals to determine type and method of anesthetic or sedation to render patient insensible to pain.
    • Coordinate and direct and oversee work of CRNAs, AAs, anesthesia/medical technicians and other members of the care team.
    • Order laboratory tests, x-rays and other diagnostic procedures.• Diagnose illnesses or conditions, using examinations, tests and reports.
    • Manage provision of individual patient's anesthesia services, coordinating them with other medical activities and formulating plans and procedures.
    • Provide medical care and consultation in many settings, prescribing medication and treatment and referring patients for surgery.
    • Inform students and staff of types and methods of anesthesia administration, signs of complications and emergency methods to counteract adverse reactions.
    • Take appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection of patients, and other health care professionals.
    • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of patient information at all times.
    • Monitor the patient's physical response to the anesthetic and informs the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition.
    • Manage the anesthesia process to include induction, maintenance, and emergence of general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases.
    • Assist with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, SRNAs, AAs and medical students in the clinical area.
    • Assume responsibility and accountability for controlled substances according to department and Facility policy and State and federal guidelines.
    • Maintain all required continuing education credits, credentialing, professional licensure, insurance payer enrollment and completion of all required employer training on time.
    • Promote teamwork, maintaining effective working relation

    Qualifications

    • Graduation from an approved and accredited school of medicine or osteopathy.
    • Completion of residency in an accredited program in anesthesia.
    • Board certification in anesthesia or expected to be board certified in anesthesia within 2 years of hire.
    • Licensed to practice medicine in the state where the Facility/Facilities are located.
    • Holds current non-restricted federal DEA and state controlled substance licenses.
    • Proficient in computer technology utilized in the performance of duties.
    • Proficient in utilizing anesthesia equipment, monitoring systems, anesthetic and pain control drugs, and related supplies.
    • Holds and maintains BCLS and ACLS certification.
    • Effective communication skills in speaking and writing the English language.
